Olga Ivanova, convicted in 2021 for believing in God, was released from the colony in Zelenokumsk
June 11, 2024 Astrakhan region, Stavropol Territory
After spending a little more than 2 years and 3 months in the colony, Olga Ivanova, a 41-year-old Jehovah's Witness, was released on June 11, 2024. She has fully served her sentence.
In correctional colony No. 7 in the Stavropol Territory, Ivanova had to work hard in the cutting shop. Her mother said: "She was so tired that in the morning she wanted to cry, because she did not rest overnight, but had to go back to work for 12 hours. Work even on Saturday, one day off." For health reasons, Olga has been released from work in the workshop for the last few months.
Olga has a good relationship with her cellmates. She kept her joy and positive attitude thanks to her faith. According to Olga, she was greatly helped by prayer and letters from friends, which she received even in the pre-trial detention center during the staging process.
Olga Ivanova's husband Yevgeny continues to serve a long term of imprisonment in Tatarstan. Another believer from Astrakhan, Anna Safronova, continues to serve time in a correctional colony in Stavropol for her religious beliefs. Across the country, 96 more Jehovah's Witnesses are in colonies for their beliefs.
The case of Ivanov et al. in Astrakhan
A brief history of the case
In June 2020, an investigation in Astrakhan opened a criminal case under an extremist article against Sergei Klikunov, Rustam Diarov, Yevgeny Ivanov and his wife, Olga. The next day, a series of searches took place. After that, four believers were placed in custody. 3 days later, Olga Ivanova was placed under house arrest. Since June 2021, the case against believers has been considered in court. The court sentenced Evgeny, Sergei and Rustam to 8 years in prison, and Olga to 3.5 years in prison. The appeal approved this decision in February 2022, and 10 months later the cassation only tightened the punishment, adding a ban on believers to leave Astrakhan after serving their sentence. In June 2024, Olga Ivanova was released.
