June 6, 2024
The Lithuanian Parliament refused to grant state recognition to the religious community of Jehovah's Witnesses.
According to the decision of the Parliament, this community does not comply with the requirement of the Constitution and the law that its teachings and rituals do not contradict laws and morality.
The decree states that the religious teaching of Jehovah's Witnesses on the prohibition of blood transfusion is incompatible with the human right to life enshrined in the Constitution.
The document also states that the religious Teaching of Jehovah's Witnesses, which prohibits the defense of the state with weapons or assistance to the defense of the state in an unarmed manner, including military or alternative service as part of the defense forces, encourages non-compliance with the Constitution and the resulting requirements to protect the state from foreign armed attack.
According to the Law on Religious Communities and Societies, non-traditional religious communities can be "recognized by the State as part of the historical, spiritual and social heritage of Lithuania if they have strong and long-term support in society, as well as their teachings and rituals do not contradict laws and morals."
According to Lrt, Jehovah's Witnesses in the territory of present-day Lithuania began their activities in 1912 in the Klaipeda region. According to the Population and Housing Census, in 2021, 2118 people (0.075% of the country's population) identified themselves as professing this religion.
