Biography

In the winter of 2023, Tsagan Khalgaeva from Kalmykia faced criminal prosecution for her faith, which subsequently caused the woman to lose her job.


Tsagan was born in March 1978 in the Kalmyk town of Lagan. She has three brothers and a younger sister. My father is no longer alive, my mother is a pensioner. As a child, Tsagan liked active games, she also loved reading and knitting.


After school, the girl received an education in the garment industry, having mastered the profession of a cutter and a tailor of outerwear. She worked for a while in her specialty, and later worked in the field of cleaning. Tsagan still loves to sew and repair clothes.


Even as a child, Tsagan asked questions about the meaning of life, the causes of evil and injustice. She recalls: "The death of my relatives brought me suffering, and I did not understand why God could not save them, because I asked him about it in prayer." In search of answers to her questions, the girl was interested in various religions. When she arrived in Elista to study to be a tailor, she began to study the Bible. Tsagan was surprised to learn that this ancient book is consistent with science, medicine and history and contains practical advice for every day. In 2004, the girl decided to become a Jehovah's Witness.


In February 2023, Tsagan and several other believers in Elista were searched. In December of the same year, she was charged with committing a crime under an extremist article. Tsagan told me: "My family, of course, are worried about me, but I try to calm them down."


A brief history of the case


In February 2023, the FSB opened a criminal case against pensioner Kishta Tutinova from Elista for organizing the activities of an extremist organization and invaded her and her co-religionists with searches. The reason was that the believer, while at home, according to the investigation, "held religious meetings and directly participated in them in online conferences." The woman spent 2 days in an IVS, more than 4 months under house arrest and about 7 months under a ban on certain actions. Tsagan Khalgayeva and Ekaterina Menkova were witnesses in the case, but in December 2023 they were charged with participating in the activities of an extremist organization.
