What helps you to avoid giving in to discouragement?

There are times when I do feel sad about my circumstances. But when that happens, it helps me to remember that I have chosen to be one of Jehovah’s servants. If I were to give up my worship to him just to avoid being persecuted, what would that cost me in the end? I find joy in knowing that I am helping to sanctify and make known Jehovah’s name. I remain determined to prove to Satan that I will not stop serving Jehovah even in the face of death, much less imprisonment.

What Bible account has helped you to maintain the proper view of your challenges?

The book of Job has become especially meaningful to me. Starting in chapter 38, Jehovah reasons with Job by speaking about His creative power. Meditating on what Jehovah has already done and will do really puts things into perspective. It reminds me that what is most important is to be obedient to Jehovah. If I have his approval, then my problems are very insignificant.

Sergey Polosenko

Born: 1968 (Uzbekistan)

Biography: Worked as a manager of a beauty salon

Married Lydia in 1993

Raised in a family of Jehovah’s Witnesses and baptized in 1982

How has your relationship with Jehovah been affected by your time in pretrial detention?

While I was in the pretrial detention center, I could not change anything about my circumstances. It was just me and Jehovah. I experienced Jehovah as a protector, a helper and, most of all, a friend. I knew that he was with me the entire time. There is a wonderful feeling of security and stability that comes with that friendship. As my circumstances continue to change, Jehovah continues to reveal new aspects of his personality to me. I thank him so much for that.

Nikolay Vasiliyev

Born: 1984 (Aisha, Republic of Tatarstan)

Biography: Worked as a programmer

Did not believe in God. After studying the Bible, saw the logic in its teachings and became convinced that God exists. Baptized in 2005

What helps you to maintain your confidence?

Interestingly, before being put in the pretrial detention center, I was very afraid of going to prison. Now that I know what it is like to be in detention and how Jehovah sustained me, that fear is gone. While it is still hard not knowing how long the criminal trial will last and what the verdict will be, I know Jehovah is always with me. Trusting in Jehovah is the key to having peace of mind and confidence that things will work out well.

We are convinced that Jehovah will continue to comfort the hearts of all those suffering for their faith as he makes them “firm in every good deed and word.”—2 Thessalonians 2:16, 17.
