An appeal in Barnaul sent Pavel Kazadaev to a colony for 3 years

August 18, 2023 Altai Territory

On August 18, 2023, the Altai Regional Court toughened the sentence of Pavel Kazadaev, replacing 3 years of probation with 3 years in a penal colony for talking about the Bible. The believer was taken into custody in the courtroom. He pleaded not guilty and may appeal the verdict.

Before the ruling on appeal, Pavel said: “I did not continue the activities of the banned organization. I wanted and want to peacefully confess my faith together with friends, worship God, praise him, learn his commandments and principles. If I stop doing this, then I, in fact, stop being a believer. I did not have extremist motives, I do not feel hatred and enmity towards other people, including people of other religions, so my actions could not harm them. There are no victims in my case, and all my friends and relatives described me positively.”

26-year-old Pavel Kazadaev is the youngest Jehovah's Witness persecuted in the Altai Territory. The European Court of Human Rights clearly stated in its decision: “The forced liquidation of all religious organizations of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Russian Federation… revealed… signs of a policy of intolerance on the part of the Russian authorities aimed at compelling Jehovah’s Witnesses to renounce their faith and prevent others from joining her".

Case of Kazadaev in Barnaul

Brief history of the case

In May 2021, the Investigative Committee accused Pavel Kazadaev of participating in the activities of an extremist organization, “including through interviews.” This was followed by a massive raid on believers in the Altai Territory under the name "Armageddon". The security forces searched the house of Pavel's relatives in the village of Lugovoe, as well as his apartment in Novokuznetsk (Kemerovo region), after which the believer was taken to Barnaul for interrogation. After a day in the isolation ward, he was placed on bail. At the end of June 2022, the criminal case went to court. In April 2023, Pavel Kazadaev was sentenced to 3 years of probation with restriction of liberty for 6 months and a probationary period of 2 years. In August, the Court of Appeal toughened the sentence, replacing the suspended sentence with imprisonment in a colony for a period of 3 years.
